Why I’m Running

I’m Robert “Spider” Thompson — a retired public school teacher, coach, and athletic administrator who has spent my life serving North Carolina’s students and families.

For decades, I worked in our schools and on our athletic fields, mentoring young people and partnering with parents. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when we invest in public education — and what happens when we don’t. That experience is why I’m stepping forward to serve in the North Carolina House.

I’ve been married to my wife, Rhonda, for 40 years. I’m a proud father to Jared and my daughter-in-law, Amanda, and “Popie” to Sol and Sophia. Family and community are at the heart of everything I do.

I’m running to:

  • Fully fund our public schools and require accountability for the state voucher program

  • Expand Medicare and improve healthcare access for all North Carolinians

  • Create fair and equitable voting maps that truly represent the people of our state

I believe District 89 deserves leadership rooted in experience, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. Together, we can build a stronger future for our families and our communities.
